Coming Soon

I'm working on a new mini-graphic novel.  Genre is sci-fi horror.  The title is "Slices" - as in slices of time.  This is the banner for the new blog I'll be starting soon sharing all of the goodies about the graphic novel.  Hopefully, I'll get a publisher.

Newest Shoe-Ca-Ture

I have a client who asks me to create drawings for each of their employees, which is a pretty neat idea.

Here is a clip of their website and my latest shoe-ca-ture and their link:

Copier Man

My Iphone has an app where I can take a picture (over wifi) of whatever is on my LG T.V.  This was a CBS Sunday Morning news piece on a War World II veteran working in an office who is telling his war stories to an eager younger writer.  So I took a snapshot of him and made a sketch.

Look and Feel

Photoshop offers many methods to color in inked drawings.  In most of my work, I use different layers for the line, color, highlights, and shadows.  Here I try to experiment with different methods to see how they look and feel.  In the 1st example (top left) I use 2 layers, layer 1: normal color with a 50% opaque brush, and layer 2: black line .  The 2nd example, I use 4 layers, layer 1:one tone of gray, layer 2: one tone of color (using photoshops color layer mode), layer 3: normal color with a "pencil" brush, and layer 4: black line.  Example 3:  The 1st layer is many tones of gray followed by a 2nd layer of gray highlights and shadows, layer 3: flat color with photoshops color layer mode, and layer 4: black line.  With example 4, I used the same base of grays for layer 1 and 2 used in example 3. Then followed by "pencil" brush color with photoshops color layer mode, and layer 4: black line.  The last example I used reversed colors for a "solarized" look and finally the original sketch.

An Insane Amount of Work

I'm toying with the idea of jumping into an insane amount of work - with no guarantee of making any money - a graphic novel.  Yes, I know it is a "me too" idea, but I like the idea of telling stories as opposed to just trying to make a single piece of artwork or illustration.  Im not sure if this is going to be something really good or a colossal waste of time.  Here is a snapshot of some of the panels.  Hint - yes it has zombies in it, what respectable graphic novel is without Zombies?

From the Reject Department

Sometimes caricature artists instincts for what is funny need to be slimmed down before a client will accept the work.  After my second try she said "Thank You So much, Chris! I am absolutely thrilled with the drawing and so excited to give it to him! I really appreciate your patience with me and can’t thank you enough!!!"
